A grandparent DNA Test helps establish the biological relationship of a child with his or her grandparents. This test indirectly determines the family relationship of a child in cases where father is not available for paternity DNA test (mostly father is deceased or missing).

How a grandparent DNA Test works?

At times grandparents are concerned that they might not be the actual grandparent of the child. They initiate this test simply to know the truth. A grandparent DNA test determines the biological relationship of a grandchild with the grandparents. Grandparent DNA testing is particularly useful when the alleged father is not available for testing.

In a grandparent DNA test, DNA samples are collected using buccal swabs (mouth swab) from the grandparent(s) and the grandchild. At the laboratory, the DNA is extracted from the cell and specific regions of the DNA (STRs) are amplified by a process known as PCR (polymerase chain reaction). The DNA profile (pattern) of the grandparent is then compared to the DNA profile (pattern) of the grandchild. A statistical analysis is performed to obtain a “grandparentage index”

How does a grandparent DNA Test work?

A child inherits 50% of its DNA from each parent. The percentage of DNA that you share with each grandparent is around 25%. A grandparent DNA test is done by recreating the alleged father’s DNA profile by using his parents DNA profiles Using the DNA profile that has been recreated it is compared to the child’s DNA profile to calculate the statistical probability of the tested grandparents being the biological grandparents of the child.

What do I need to do to get a grandparent DNA test?

Simply visit our Order Online page and order the test. Once we have received the order, we will ship you DNA sample collection. Follow the instructions and collect samples and mail them back to us via mail/courier. After we have received the samples in our lab, we will email the results by email in 7-10 working days.

How accurate is a grandparent DNA test?

A grandparent DNA test is 99.99% accurate, and can be performed with only one of the grandparents and an alleged grandchild.

How long will it be before I get the results?

It depends on the type of test you have chosen. For a standard paternity test with oral swabs it will take us up to 7-10 working days to provide the DNA test results. Processing time for non standard samples such as hair clippings, cigarette butts or chewing gum can take from 10 to 14 working days after we receive the samples in our laboratory.
