At Greatnorth Forensics Inc we offer a range of DNA relationship tests to establish a range of relationships between alleged relatives. Tell us what you wish to find out and we will advise you on the test most suited to your needs. We offer a comprehensive range of relationship tests and can confidently answer any relationship query.
A Y chromosome test is the ideal test to confirm a shared patrilineal (paternal) line between male relatives. The Y chromosome is inherited only by males and test results will provide you with the clear cut answer you need. Once the DNA samples are at the laboratory, you will receive your comprehensive DNA analysis report in 7-10 working days.
A DNA sibling test is used in cases where alleged siblings wish to confirm if they are biologically related. A siblings test can be carried out without the DNA sample of the known parent if, prior to testing, the siblings know they are definitely half siblings. In cases where siblings want to determine whether they are half-siblings, the sample of the known parent/s (this is normally the mother) is highly recommended to strengthen the result of the test.
A maternity DNA test helps determine the maternal lineage of the test participants. In a Maternity DNA test we compare the DNA profile of the alleged mother and child/children to determine if their DNA matches at 50% level. A child inherits 50% of its DNA from each parent.
Our DNA relationship tests (siblingship, aunt and uncle and grandparentage tests etc.) are performed to scientific standards accepted globally.
Siblingship Testing
DNA testing methods determine biological relationships within a family. A sibling DNA test determines whether two individuals (regardless of sex) are full or half siblings. However, unlike paternity DNA testing, which provides very conclusive results, siblingship DNA tests are not as conclusive and are probabilistic. If two individuals are full siblings, mathematically we expect them to share 50% of the genetic markers we test. If two individuals are half siblings, then 25% of their genes will be common. This allows us to determine statistically the chance that they would share the DNA if they are siblings, compared to if they are unrelated (i.e. if they matched by chance – population frequency). It is not possible to determine with 100% certainty whether or not two people are siblings. These results are reported on a likelihood scale. It should also be considered that there is a chance of inconclusive results with this kind of relationship testing.
