What is The Difference Between a Home Paternity Test and a Legal Paternity Test?

Technically, there is no difference between a Home Paternity Test (aka Peace of Mind Test or Curiosity Test) and a Legal Paternity Test. The only difference lies in the way the DNA samples are collected. For a home paternity test, you can simply order a DNA sampling kit online, receive the kit at home and collect samples yourself from the comfort of your home. The DNA kit includes detailed instructions on “How to collect DNA samples” using sterile oral cotton swabs and documentation for labeling and consent of the test participants. Once the samples are collected you just send them to our laboratory for analysis and receive the results in 7-10 working days.

No, for legal paternity DNA testing a strict chain of custody must be followed to make the test results court admissible. Chain of custody outlines when, where and how a DNA sample was collected and handled (starting from the moment the DNA sample was collected and ending with the disposition of the sample). A continuous and complete chain of custody ensures the identity and integrity of the DNA sample. For home paternity test, there is no way of tracking the origin and handling of the DNA sample thereof chain of custody is not maintained.

Does the mother need to participate in the test?

Mother’s participation in the DNA test is optional. Although mother’s participation is recommended, it’s not required. A child inherits 50% of its DNA from the biological father and 50% from the biological mother. By comparing the mother’s DNA profile with that of a child we can determine which half of the DNA profile came from the mother and which half must come from the biological father. Thus making DNA test results more conclusive. In extremely rare cases mother’s absence in the testing can produce inconclusive result.

How conclusive are the DNA test results?

A paternity DNA DNA test is scientifically considered to be the most accurate testing method available. In cases of “inclusion of paternity” where a man is highly likely to be the biological father with about 99.9% accuracy, or that he is excluded as being the biological father with 100% accuracy.

How long until I receive the DNA test results?

Our turnaround time for home paternity tests is 7-10 workings days beginning the day we received all samples in our lab. The only exception to this time frame is for Legal DNA testing where it may take 10-14 working days for the results to be emailed to the test participants. We may require additional time to process discrete samples (samples other than swabs).

Do all participants need to be collected at the same time?

No, arrangements can be made to collect DNA samples from participants at different times.

I don’t have any ID, can you do it anyway?

No, a legal DNA test collection cannot be completed without proof of identity that has to be valid, original and govt issued.
