Police check ( criminal Record Check)

A police record check (also known as a level 1 check or clearance letter) is a document issued by the police service that indicates an applicant has no criminal convictions in the National Repository of Criminal Records maintained by the RCMP.  There are also other different names used for the same documents, including Records check, criminal background check and CPIC.

A Criminal Record Check will disclose information on an applicant’s criminal convictions (summary and/or indictable) from CPIC and/or local databases.  Also, it brings findings of guilt under the Youth Criminal Justice Act within the applicable disclosure period.

Criminal Record Checks are typically used for immigration, employment and travel purposes.  Criminal record checks are not required for most jobs or volunteer positions that involve contact with the Vulnerable Sector (e.g., hospitals, daycares, elder care facilities).  Applicants need a different background check called a Police Reference check or Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS).
